Orthostatic Headaches

چکیده
The syndrome of low-pressure CSF headaches was first recognized following diagnostic lumbar puncture. In the 1940s and 50s, Woltman in the United States ( [1] ) and Schaltenbrand in Germany ( [2] ) described "spontaneous" posture-related low-pressure headaches that did not develop after lumbar puncture. In spontaneous CSF leaks, there is sometimes a history of strenuous activity or trivial traumatic injury. Mokri et al. ( [3] ) have recently described cases associated with postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS). Schievink et al.( [4] ) have also linked intracranial hypotension with connective tissue disorders. Ferrante et al. ( [5] ) reported a case of Marfan's syndrome and postural headache in whom MRI myelography revealed bilateral multiple large meningeal diverticula at sacral nerve roots level; the authors postulated that

Orthostatic Intolerance and Other Autonomic Symptoms in Adolescents With Headaches
Background: The identification of autonomic comorbidity in adolescents with headaches could provide additional treatment strategies. The objective of this study was to identify and quantify autonomic symptoms in adolescents with headaches during a clinic visit using the COMPASS 31 questionnaire. Methods: The Institutional Review Board at Greenville Health System approved chart review of 92 adol...
متن کاملSquamous Carcinoma of the Lung Presenting as Migraine-Type Headache: A Case Report
INTRODUCTION Orthostatic hypotension has long been recognised as a paraneoplastic effect of lung cancer. Lung cancer presenting with orthostatic hypotension and migraine-type headaches has not been previously described in the literature. CASE REPORT A 62-year-old Caucasian male presented with headaches, typical of his migraine, after a 30-year migraine-free period. An examination revealed a s...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW This article identifies the pertinent historical issues that lead to the identification of those headaches needing additional testing to exclude a serious underlying cause. RECENT FINDINGS Recurrences of giant cell arteritis, even after presumed successful treatment, are common. Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome is an often unrecognized cause of headache. SUMMARY P...
متن کاملEpidural Blood Patch for the Treatment of Spontaneous and Iatrogenic Orthostatic Headache.
BACKGROUND The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage could be happened spontaneously or related to the procedures such as spinal anesthesia, epidural anesthesia, CSF tapping, intrathecal chemotherapy or other spinal procedures. The leakage of CSF leads to intracranial hypotension of which distinguishing clinical feature is orthostatic headache. The epidural blood patch is a gold-standard treatment ...
متن کاملPneumocephalus in Patients With Orthostatic Headache
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak or shunt overdrainage is a well-known cause of orthostatic headaches and low CSF pressures. We report two cases of orthostatic headache with pneumocephalus on brain imaging. The orthostatic headache developed after drainage of spinal operation site and epidural block. Brain MRI revealed characteristic findings of CSF hypovolemia including pachymeningeal enhancemen...
متن کاملMetastatic paraganglioma: management of orthostatic hypotension – a case report
Metastatic paragangliomas are rare tumours, which characteristically secrete high levels of catecholamines, thereby giving rise to symptoms such as headaches, palpitations and profuse sweating. Orthostatic hypotension also results from these types of tumours, however the aetiology of this remains unclear. Here we describe a 40 year old lady with metastatic paraganglioma whose initial diagnosis ...
